Cherokee Nation – Paul Revere and The Raiders

This was a favorite of mine when I was a teenager. 40 years later, same discussions going on. The song, the music and the band can still take me back…laying on the floor in front of the big ol stereo console with my bestie. We thought we had the world by the horns and nobody could tell us any different. Thanks Dormis Aeternitas for sharing this post with us! I dedicate this post to my original bestie Carol Ross Huston!

They took the whole Cherokee nation
Put us on this reservation
Took away our ways of life
The tomahawk and the bow and knife
Took away our native tongue
And taught their English to our young
And all the beads we made by hand
Are nowadays made in Japan

Cherokee people
Cherokee tribe
So proud to live
So proud to die

They took the whole Indian nation
Locked us on this reservation
Though I wear a shirt and tie
I’m still part redman deep inside

Cherokee people
Cherokee tribe
So proud to live
So proud to die

But maybe someday when we’ve learned
Cherokee nation will return
Will return, will return
Will return, will return…
